MarkLane will talk about his book “Roaring Reptiles, Bountiful Citrus, and Neon Pies: An Unofficial Guide to Florida’s Official Symbols.” Florida is a place perennially confused about its identity and over the years, its legislature has tried to help with decidedly mixed results. Lane, a columnist for the Daytona Beach News-Journal, attempts to decode these for the puzzled newcomer and bemused local. “MarkLane’s romp through the demented iconography of the nation’s weirdest state is as tasty as Key Lime pie and as biting as a dyspeptic gator,” Diane Roberts wrote. The book was honored this year with the Florida Historical Society Charlton Tebeau Award.
